LGBT history

The Leeds CHE Group was founded in 1971.

There are plans to create an official Gay Quarter as has happened in Manchester and Liverpool.[1]

Leeds Pride, held in August, is the biggest LGBT Pride event in Yorkshire. It has been celebrated since 2006. Lesbian strength marched in Leeds in 2019 and planned to do so again in 2022.

Local LGBT organisations include:

SAGE is a project run by Time to Shine which is focused on reducing the isolation faced by older LGBT people. It offers activities and events [3]. All Hallows Church is an Anglican church providing a special welcome to LGBT people.

LGBT sports clubs include the Yorkshire Terriers FC.

The New Penny is said to be the longest-running gay pub in the UK. The Hope and Anchor was well known as a gay pub in the 1960s [4].

Queer Stories is a social history project which aims to collect, celebrate and preserve a living archive of Leeds’s older LGBT community [5].

In 2022 the Council paid for 16 LGBT slabs to be laid in the gay quarter. Yorkshire Post reported: Construction company John Sisk & Son, who also won the bid to construct a £21.5m refurbishment of the Corn Exchange area in 2020, laid the LGBT+ flags nearby several iconic gay venues and landmarks in Leeds this afternoon, including in front of popular nightlife hub Bar Fibre [6].
