Gay Community Organisation (GCO) was formed in 1982 as an umbrella organisation designed to coordinate local activities and provide a central fund. GCO was formed following the establishment of a special commission by the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE) to examine the future of the CHE. The GCO scheme was launched at the Sheffield Gayfest and officially came into existence on 1 September 1982. 24 groups were set up but by April 1983 there were problems with the relations between local groups and the central organisation. The central body ceased to exist in 1984 but some local groups continued.
