Daniel Kawczynski (Daniel Robert Kawczynski, born 1972) is a Conservative politician and MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, Shropshire.

He was born in Warsaw, Poland, and came to the UK with his mother in the 1970s. He studied Business Studies with Languages at the University of Stirling, where he was president of the University Conservative Association in 1991. After graduating, he worked as an an international account manager in the telecommunications industry.[1]

He stood for Parliament for Ealing Southall in 2001, coming second. In 2005 he took the Shrewsbury and Atcham seat from Labour, and he retained the seat in 2010. He won over 52% of the votes cast in the constituency at the 2019 General Election, almost doubling his majority [2].

In May 2008, he voted to lower the abortion time limit to 12 weeks,[3] and has stated that he believes an abortion limit of 24 weeks is incompatible with the kind of "Christian society" he wishes to live in.[4] He also voted against a House of Lords amendment to abolish the offences of blasphemy and blasphemous libel under common law.[5]

He is a member of the socially conservative Cornerstone Group, and is a vice-chairman of Conservative Friends of Poland.[6] At At 6 feet 8 1⁄2 inches, Kawczynski is believed to be the tallest MP ever to sit in Parliament.[7]

Personal life

Kawczynski was divorced by his wife in 2011, and in June 2013 announced to his Conservative Association that his new partner is male.[8] He is the first MP in Britain to come out as bisexual. [9]
