It is the main town in the county borough of Merthyr Tydfil, which is now a unitary authority, but treated for ceremonial purposes as part of the preserved county of [[Mid Glamorgan]]. In the 19th century the growth of the local ironworks led to a great expansion of the town until it became for a time the most populous town in Wales.
